April 4th, 2021 we received confirmation that the 6th iteration of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure anime was in the works. This was welcomed considering Golden Wind was well received and helped it recover from a lagging entry into the series, Diamond is Unbreakable. Those who have been following the series knows that love and care is ALWAYS put into the JoJo series, and thus I thought it was going to take longer to release, but am happy that it’s coming in December of this year.
Jumping on twitter this morning after working my usual 12-hour long weekend shift, I saw that we were graced with the opening to Stone Ocean already. So I decided to go ahead and check it out…and, spoiler alert, it’s good!
The first thing that’s immediately obvious to me about JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean is the fact that they went back to 3D! As you know, starting with Diamond is Unbreakable, the JoJo series went the way of 2D openings (much to my and many fans dismay at first), which took some getting used to but we did. The 3D is used mostly to showcase different angles from still scenes, which is a big contrast to the constant moving we saw in previous openings. Also, I notice that the animation does not seem as “vivid” as before.
It’s immediately noticeable that TONS of bright colors are used; blues, yellows, pinks, purples, and greens. While the choice for particularly bright colors could merely be a design choice, I think it is to highlight the fact that Jolyne Kujo is the first female lead that the series has ever seen. Femininity could be the main point of this series, and they definitely wanted to highlight that with the direction of the opening.
Also, I want to comment on the song “Ichigo” by Kishida cult & The Akeboshi Rockets. I 100% think that this song absolutely smacks (and I cannot wait for the full release of it on December 1st). Definitely fits the opening of JoJo‘s song smacking. Ugh. Stone Ocean cannot start soon enough!
