CAPCOM vs SNK 2 to be Re-released!..Wait..NO ONLINE?!

Hands down one of my favorite fighting games of all-time is “CAPCOM vs SNK 2: Millionaire Fighting 2001 カプコン バーサス エス・エヌ・ケイ 2 ミリオネア ファイティング” (Known in the United States as “CAPCOM vs SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001“).  This was definitely one of the best crossovers CAPCOM has ever done and I was anxiously awaiting an HD release since everything else seemed to be getting one, but it seems that will not be the case.
CAPCOM vs SNK 2 released again as a “Playstation 2 Classic” with no updated graphics or features.  Later they confirmed it will be coming to the U.S., but not if it would have any features or be on the Xbox 360.  I want to address why I think it should receive an HD release.

The Possible Return of Millionaire Fighting!

With the release of CAPCOM vs SNK 2 on the Japanese Playstation Network under “Playstation 2 Classics” we see a ported return of one of the most cherished crossover titles and widely considered one of the best fighting games of all-time.  However, this classic did not receive the same HD (High Definition) upgrade treatment we saw with Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD, Street Fighter III: Third Strike HD, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure HD, or Marvel vs Capcom 2: Fate of Two Worlds HD.  Not only that, because it was listed under “Playstation 2 Classics” I have no idea if we will be getting it on my preferred console, Microsoft Xbox 360, simply because it is a port of an older title and not a brand new one in the works…but hopefully they actually are working on an “HD Remix” to release to all regions.
However, let us not also forget that bringing back a former series can sometime mean a sequel is in the process and this is merely to get everyone interested in the franchise again to provide hype to the fighting game community.  Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix and Marvel vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes were brought out before their sequels of Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds made it to us.  Even the new  DarkStalkers Resurrection is rumored to be leading up to a DarkStalkers 4.  With all this in mind, this merely could be a setup for a possible CAPCOM vs SNK 3.
Fond Memories as a Kid

Good ole’ boxart for the Playstation 2.  Does that bring back memories for anyone else?!
Remembering back to my days as a kid, I remember playing this game on Playstation 2, Dreamcast, Xbox, and the Arcade.  Playstation 2 is where I owned the game and perfected combos through solo training at home.  Dreamcast is where I played at my best friend “J-Roc’s” house and where I first fell in love with the game, same with playing with them on the original Xbox (But I had to deal with CAPCOM vs SNK 2: EO which provided simplified controls through easy input of supers and special attacks via a flick of the right analog stick which resembled what they did in the GameCube version of the game, which was such a pain in the ass.  It did however, have online but removed the roll-cancel glitch, urgh).  In the Arcade version, I clearly remember using Ratio 2 Terry/Ken and making it to 1st place on the leaderboards at the Circus Circus arcade in Las Vegas, was a beautiful thing (I also remember someone picking my exact team after watching me complete the entire game off of a single credit and losing at the first stage, hehe!).
I spent countless hours playing this game and mastering it, probably all forgotten now but those memories and matches still flood back to me until this day. My team consisted of Ratio 1 Cammy/Hibiki, and finishing off with a Ratio 2 Rock Howard (Who is my favorite SNK character and only made other fighting game appearances in Garou: Mark of the Wolves and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum if I remember correctly).
If This Game is Released, it MUST have ONLINE!

Morrigan of DarkStalkers in A-Groove vs Nakoruru of Samurai Showdown in C-Groove.
The fact that this game probably will not have an HD remake does not bother me, it is the fact that they may not implement online play for this title.  This “No online” thing is a concern to me because a fighting game is absolutely no good to me if it does not have online.  Why is that?  Well, because of me being of the working class and having to do so on the weekends on the graveyard shifts (You will not believe how many Fight Clubs I have had to miss because of my crazy 12-hour working schedule), I am unable to participate in many local events without using my Paid-Time-Off to do so.  So, while many might be happy to bring this back to their local scenes, I need it to be online to be able to indulge in everything the game has to offer.  Also it does not help that my friends are not as adept to fighting games as I am, furthering the reasoning while I want this game to have online.
Not only that, this game has to have online in order for those who want to bring this game back to the forefront to fully practice with colleagues away from the crowded venues of local Ranbats, Round-Robins, and Tournaments in order to get a better understanding of the game without the pressure of a crowd of people watching your every move.  Also, online is thriving because of the sheer number of people like me who are considered “Online Warriors” because of our online preference mainly due to the fact that offline play is not accessible or not desired.  Furthering this backing are websites like  GameBattles and other sites that encourage online competition in the form of Competitive ladders and tournaments, such as  CEVO.
While this game did not have a very strong following at first, it got many followers later on in its life cycle and became one of the most loved games of all-time.  If this game was able to be brought back by its old merits alone, we would still be bringing DreamCasts and Playstation 2s in order to play this game,a nd some people still do.  However, I would love to jump into a huge populace ready to throw down the gauntlet and battle it out online in unpredictable battles where the most skilled will rule all.  Seeing this as an attraction at Evolution World Fighting Game Championships would be beautiful as a side-tournament, since it was already featured as a main line-up game in previous EVO’s.
I know that they are probably skeptical to release online functionality and a HD version simply because of the performance of Street Fighter III: Third Strike HD and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure HD, but this game would be a sure fire bet amongst all fighting games fans if they went High Definition.
Ideas for the Online Multiplayer

Gotta love that C-Groove….really have to hate that Shin Akuma in EO mode…ugh.

In order for the Online Multiplayer to succeed if they are to implement it into the system, I figure we need a couple of things: All the basics of the other fighting games, Online Pair Play, and the ability to host and watch tournaments online in real time.

The first is all the basics of other fighting games.  This would include Replay Mode (With rooms to invite friends to come watch saved Replays with you!), Online Practice Mode, Lobbies with Spectator Mode, Player Match (WITH A REMATCH OPTION), and of course Ranked Match.  I feel like all of this is self-explanatory and something included with titles like Street Fighter x TEKKEN and Super Street Fighter IV.  These are things that would not be hard to implement with everything CAPCOM has done in the best, especially with an older title that does not require as much data being sent because of updated graphics (Then again, maybe they would not want to risk going so big on a game that would probably be released for 1200 Microsoft Points ($15) because it may be fairly expensive to include all of those titles).  However, if they want this game to truly succeed and everyone to purchase it, you must have at least all the basics down and covered.

Next off is the Online Pair Play.  Be honest, we all love to throw down against our buddies but we love to team up with them and kick someone else’s ass even more.  Teaming up with my “Eternal Rival” RaS the Riot Trigger, humble sensei Deg222, and ex partner-in-crime DynaDASH in Street Fighter x TEKKEN (You can check our recorded matches  HERE and  HERE) was more fun than I had in quite a long time and proved teaming up can be a lot more fun.  If they made it where each player had 2 Ratio they can pick from (Either one Ratio 2 character or two Ratio 1 characters) it would provide an incredible experience and since it is 1-on-1 and not tag like Street Fighter x TEKKEN, we would not have syncing issues.  Overall, this would provide the MUST HAVE fighting experience for friends teaming up.

Last but not least the ability to host and watch tournaments online in real time.  It would be cool to join a tournament-in-progress and be able to watch the festivities of opponents fighting it out online and be able to host to do the same.  Also, they could hold special things where you have to win a tournament a certain day to get a certain title or maybe an online rank for most tournaments won, even “Pair Tournaments” where you and your friends go online and fight to see who is the best tag team; who wouldn’t want to play something this immersive?

All-in-all, I think these options included in the multiplayer would provide the best experience for this game and make it the must have Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade game for fighting gamers.

The Verdict

Undoubtedly this even getting a release is a very good thing for everyone since it could spell a HD release and possible sequel for CAPCOM vs SNK 2; but at the very same time it could merely be a re-release without any upgrades, challenges, or online and present a very lackluster experience for those of us who cannot participate in our local offline scene.  I think it would be wise for CAPCOM and SNK, if they are preparing to launch a sequel to this massive crossover series, to pull out all the stops to get the most bang for their buck, because I am already ready to throw my money at the screen if they give the full makeover a green light.

  1. Although the game is out and I own it, i would still pay 20 for online play. If cvs3 is released I would buy every capcom game that is released the same year just to say thanks.
