Waifu Gotta Shotgun! Combo Video Informational and Notations

Lately I have been really into Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-, it becoming one of my favorite fighting games because of the visuals, play style, and fierce competitive game play.  Also, I recently switched my main from Jam Kuradoberi to Elphelt Valentine for various reasons; aesthetics, beauty of the combos, and overall presentation of the character.  Due to me loving the character so much, I decided to go ahead and make my second combo video (ever), “Waifu Gotta Shotgun!”.
Inside you will find the combo video itself, details on why I picked Elphelt Valentine out of all the Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-, and notations for every single combo performed in the video!
NOTE  – Be sure to check out my review for Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-!

 My History with Guilty Gear

I have always loved the Guilty Gear series, but unfortunately when I got into the game I was nothing more than a button masher.  I first started off with Guilty Gear XX #Reload: The Midnight Carnival and the last game I played before -REVELATOR- happened to be Guilty Gear Isuka.  The game was fun and I knew I really enjoyed the style, but I had no idea at all how to play.
Like many people growing up, I first learned how to properly play fighting games after the release of Street Fighter IV.  It should be noted, however that played nearly every single fighting game since Street Fighter II, but did not actually learn how to “properly” play until SFIV.  Despite the Guilty Gear Accent Core series coming out, I was far too intimidated by not knowing what I was doing to try and stray away from the Street Fighter series.
Once I started to play BlazBlue and get well acquainted with the fighting style, Guilty Gear began to look less intimidating overall.  However, I did not want to go back and try Guilty Gear Accent Core since there were rumors of a “Guilty Gear X3” in development, and so I bided my time and just waited.  Eventually this lead to the release trailer of “Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN”, unfortunately I only had an Xbox One and could not play the game at all.
Honestly, I bought a Playstation 4 for the release of Street Fighter V but was left underwhelmed by the game play, backgrounds, and lack of content.  I was starving for more fighting games, but the only thing I had to entertain me was Killer Instinct on my Xbox One and Street Fighter V for Playstation 4, pretty bland.  One day, within my business e-mail I got a review code for Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- from Aksys Games (the localization company that publishes Arc System Works games) to review it.  I was surprised at what I found; amazing graphics, beautiful backgrounds, fierce game play, and amazing newcomers that added their uniqueness to the already established Guilty Gear characters.
Right now, I am presently convinced that Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- is the best fighting game to be currently released for Xbox One and Playstation 4.  The only game I see topping it within the near future is The King of Fighters XIV, but Arc System Works is known for their amazing Netcode while SNK is not (unfortunately).

Just for the record, my true main in the Guilty Gear series is “A.B.A.”.  Unfortunately for me, she is not in this game, so I am having to go with other options until they decide to include my favorite Homunculus and her blood thirsty key “husband”.
I first started off this game with Jam Kuradoberi, she was someone who I believed fit my favorite archetypes for characters; she was a hand-to-hand fighter, she had immeasurable damage inside of a small body, and she was female.  Unfortunately, she did not have much presence at all inside of -REVELATOR-‘s story.  I was also greatly upset that they made Jam talk like a foreigner in broken language, it made her woefully unenjoyable since that seems to be a disheartening trope when Japanese people portray Chinese people (such as Ku Fei in the manga “Negima: Magister Negi Magi”).
Elphelt Valentine was the character I really wanted to learn to use from the start, unfortunately I did not because I feared that she was too popular and would be picked very often compared to most other characters (something I do not really care for).  However, despite the fact that she is considered a powerful character, she seems not to be a favorite among most people I played against online.  In fact, I have only really fought two or three players using Elphelt during the course of me playing online with -REVELATOR-, and none of those players were able to do shotgun loops.  Seeing as there was a clear opportunity to play her “guilt free”, I decided to go ahead and switch mains.
I love how Elphelt’s combos look (I have been a fan of shotguns since Gears of War) and that she is based off of the band “Guns and Roses” (I believe).  She wears a modified wedding dress, a huge and ridiculous collar, and has an amazingly bubbly personality (which clearly comes through her winning sequence and taunts).  The biggest factor however, was her alternate color palette for darker skin, which is amongst the best in the entire game.  Guilty Gear has always had a history of doing darker skin color palettes for characters, this has always appealed to me since there are not many dark skin characters within fighters (we have same, but not really abundant).

 Notation Notes

Elphelt Valentine’s “Waifu Gotta Shotgun” marks my second time in making a combo video.   The very first combo video I made was “Deus ex Ruina” for my Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds team of X-23, Dormammu, and Dante.
I did the best I could with the variety of Elphelt combos that I performed.  I tried to include combos that only used 50% tension since I feel like that would be what most people would realistically be willing to spend in a fight (though, I do have one combo off of a grab which uses 100% tension, but you do build about 25% tension during the combo itself).  Also, I did not include YRC (Yellow Roman Cancel) combos because I feel that they are also unrealistic since they are mostly for setups and not actual combo purposes.
It should also be noted that all combos within this video were performed on Ky Kiske.  This should be addressed because some combos here may not work the same on other characters and require some tweaking and variation, or they will simply not work at all.  Likewise, some combos that work on others will not necessarily work on Ky Kiske.  The main purpose of this video is to show off what I have found and give others the ability to replicate the combos.  Experiment on your own and see what you come up with and what is effective against multiple characters.
 Terminology Explained
Here are a few useful things that you will need to know to fully understand the combo notations I am going to give you.  Familiarize yourself with them so that you will not need to refer to this section every time you come across a term.
RC – Roman Cancel.  Performed by pushing P+K+S.
Maximum Shot – Performed by taking out Elphelt’s shotgun (Ms. Travailler) taking aim for a brief second until an aura appears, then firing afterwards.  Will wall splat opponents close to the corner.
Take aim briefly – After taking out Elphelt’s Shotgun, stand in one spot until she raises it up and an aura appears around her (Same as with Maximum Shot).
JC – Jump Cancel.  Perform by jumping in order to cancel the recovery animations of a move.
Berry Pine – This is Elphelt’s grenade, and it is performed by pushing QCF+P.
QCF – Quarter-Circle Forward motion.

HCB – Half-Circle Back motion.

Less Than (>) – Use to show that a move will chain into the next one as soon as it is pressed.

Cancel into (xx) – Use to show that you will be canceling a normal into a special move.

 Instant Kill Combos

Instant Kills are just as they say, they have the ability to instantly kill your opponent when you land it on them.  This is very hard due to the fact that you must catch your opponent afraid as you cannot normally combo into it.  However, if your opponent is down to their last 20% of life, their life bar will flash indicating that they are low enough to where you can combo into an instant kill.  It can also be performed by your opponent being above 20% life and you combo them down to their last 10%.  You also have to have 100% tension, so it is hard to land IK combos during competitive matches.

 In Closing

I would sincerely like to thank each and every one of you who viewed my combo video “Waifu Gotta Shotgun!”.  It was sincerely fun to make, albeit long, I do not regret it.  I only wish I could have provided better combos that also include Instant Air Dashes in the middle of them, but sadly I cannot perform them very well on controller (I need to buy an arcade stick for my Playstation 4, no money at the moment).
This is only my second combo video, so I am hoping to improve on my editing and ability as I continue to make more content.  Please, like, share, and subscribe to my channel for more goodness soon into the future!
