The Press Release for WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers describe it as an “folklore-infused Soulslike Action-RPG”. Those of you who know me happen to be well aware of the fact I’m not a huge fans of “Souls-like” games. I am very much an advocate for heavy Hack-n-Slash games like Devil May Cry or Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. However, after Elden Ring and Khazan: The First Berserker, my mind is beginning to change on that front.
Considering the name (WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers sounds cool as hell), I am guessing this will be of Chinese origin and deals with that folklore. So let’s watch the trailer and see what they have to offer.
IMPRESSIONS
Starts off very ominous with a pinwheel being the main focal point, including a lady questioning whether the actions taken by someone were necessary. That the route they’re going is either futile or fruitless due to the fact that fate cannot “Be changed”. We are greeted be beautiful scenery and imagery, culminating with fighting between our MC and some of her adversaries. Not only that, we see cinematics regarding some things of the world; nightmarish creatures and practices resulting in an ominous display of power. It finally ends with our MC lying asleep, partially curled up with a voice over saying, “What will it take…to finally awaken you?”. Flash to “Nothing is Forever”.
First off, the music and the cinematics are beautiful. They have did a very good job orchestrating this trailer to be appeasing in a way that invites you into the visual world they’ve crafted and giving off a mysterious, occult, and folklore filled atmosphere. The biggest issue however, is the combat.
The combat within the trailer seemed sluggish, not-too responsive nor explosive. It feels slow and methodical, but not within a way that’s completely gripping and satisfying. Considering everything else was quite alluring and amazing, the gameplay being the downside to a trailer is NEVER a good feeling. However, things could be refined or bad cuts could’ve happened. Seeing more would allow a better reflection of what’s to come, and perhaps hands-on experience in the way of a demo could rectify any doubts. For now, I’m keeping my eyes open.
