It’s been a VERY LONG time since we’ve gotten more reveals for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, so it makes sense that Playstation’s “State of Play” would give us some brand new information. We were treated to the “Unbreakable X-Men” trailer, featuring three brand new characters we haven’t seen before: Magik, Wolverine, and “Danger” (The personification of the X-Men’s Danger Room). Let’s check out the trailer and I’ll give some impressions regarding it.
Also, for those of you who do not know; it was confirmed that they will be launching with 20 characters. Also, this game will be launching on August 6th, 2026. That’s a little under 6 months from now.
Starting off, I had no idea what this trailer was for until we got the stylized comic overlay, immediately I understood that the anime-style belong to non other than Arc System Works, which lead to the conclusion of it being Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
The Xavier’s School which operates as the base for the X-Men was previously revealed, and it looks fantastic. That’s when we are introduced to the other characters, and I’m going to break it down one-by-one.
- STORM — The X-Men has had many leaders, the most noticeable being Storm and Cyclops; I believe that will be her role this time around. We saw what she can do within previously trailers and through the beta tests, so her toolkit isn’t much of a mystery. Has a lot of elemental based attacks (due to her manipulation of the weather), and can push and pull herself, opponents, and things she put into place with a Rachel Alucard wind-like mechanic. Not the most exciting character, but is definitely a mainstay.
- MAGIK — Most people found out about Colossus’ little sister through Marvel’s newest hero shooter, “Marvel Rivals“. However, she has been a popular character long before that, but her popularity has certainly spiked. I like the aesthetic, but she looks less womanly and more of a teenager; which is the opposite of Storm. Though I suppose it’s more of a representation of maturity. I’m fond of her portal abilities which are a staple, and how Magik seems to have an empowered mode which grants access to modified moves and the ability to throw a fireball. Seems like her Super Art will be Darkchylde.
- WOLVERINE — One of the most popular characters within the franchise, this Canadian brawler has seen a myriad of both comic and silver screen success (including an upcoming video game akin to the Marvel’s Spider-Man games). I’m not too much of a fan of his costume, only because I expected something drastically different from the status quo. Looks like your run-of-the-mill wolverine without very much redesigning like what happened with both Captain America and Ironman. Moreover, I’m not a fan of his playstyle; I felt like it should be more BRUTAL and savage. Feels very feminine with the backwards slash, reminiscent of Mature from The King of Fighters.
- DANGER — The embodiment of the Danger Room that the X-Men used to train in, they’re reimagined as a sentient robot who fights alongside her allies. Heavily reminds me of both Echo from OVERWATCH and Aria from KILLER INSTINCT; at least in inspirations. I also see remnants of Grimnir from Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising. Also, they threw in an easter egg of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann by giving Danger the “Giga Drill Breaker”.
Overall, this wasn’t a bad reveal; but I feel like they need to address the biggest elephant within the room: Their combat system. Right now, more character reveals are completely fine as we get closer to launch, but giving us only 20 characters means it’s a significantly smaller roster than I was hoping for (32 at the very least; 8 teams of 4). So, we will see if I get enough characters to make a team of people I TRULY enjoy.
The current roster stands at: Storm, Wolverine, Magik, Danger, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, Ms. Marvel, Captain America, Dr. Doom, Star-Lord, and Ironman. With that, we have 11 of the 20 characters revealed. Right now, my current team from those seen is Magik, Ms. Marvel, Captain America, and Ghost Rider. However, no one I really love has made it in yet; so we’ll see how things go from here.
