Since the reveal of Mai and Terry in Street Fighter 6, everyone was wondering how something so unprecedented came to be since we never saw a guest character within that series. However, we later learned that SNK’s new game, FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves featured Chun-Li and Ken, the rivals of the guest characters present within Street Fighter 6.
After finally getting a faithful adaptation of Ken, I was wondering how Chun-Li would play and was excited about her future gameplay trailer. It’s finally here, so I’ll give you my impression as we explore this trailer together!
The first thing I noticed about this trailer is that they are playing up the rivalry between Chun-Li and Mai, which I feel is quite endearing.
The first thing I want to comment on is Chun-Li’s aesthetic. Much like Ken, SNK chose to go with Chun-Li as she appears in Street Fighter 6 with her default costume. One of the things they leaned into, which is very apparent when she’s walking up to Mai within the intro cinematic to the gameplay, is that her thighs are HUGE. A nice plus in my opinion since that thickness is something which has defined the character just as much as her iconic fighting style. I feel like her overall look is quite good here, at least as faithful as it can be within the stylized look of FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves. I will say that I believe her classic costume, shown when they display Chun-Li’s “Hidden Gear”, looks better than her default costume in this game. If I were playing Chun-Li, I’d definitely go for the vintage visage.
As far as her gameplay though, she looks very faithful to her Street Fighter counterpart. I find that it’s insane how well that Ken was adapted, but now it appears that things weren’t a fluke. They’ve went in completely with all of the moves which fans of the character have grown to love and adore: Kikosho, Spinning Bird Kick, etc. I even seen familiar links available within the Street Fighter universe, such as the sequence around 0:49 seconds. I mean, they’ve even got her yosokyaku stomp attacks which will combo after her super.
What appeals to me most is how they’ve mixed all of her super attacks together with her “Hidden Gear”, including the Shichisei Senkuu Kyaku, which only appeared in the early Marvel VS games. I think that’s a pretty great nod to her.
Overall, I think they showed this character a lot of love. However, just like Mai, I feel like she does not have much flash within her normal gameplay; I wish they’d spice it up a bit more, but I understand this is more so of an adaptation rather than a modification (which is something the mainline Street Fighter series should do). I think they’ve did a great job and fans of Chun-Li will be happy; no idea if she’s going to see a lot of play however. I feel like Chun-Li is iconic and a symbol of fighting games and CAPCOM, but never sees as much gameplay outside of the novelty she provides.
