I was excited for the trailers for Ken and Chun-Li of Street Fighter fame when I realized that SNK were adding them to the new Fatal Fury game; there was even talk of a potential new CAPCOM VS SNK due to the fact we got Terry and Mai in Street Fighter VI. For now however, let’s go ahead and check out the juicy trailer that SNK has cooked up for us and see whether-or-not the long-awaited hype was worth it!
The first thing you’ve got to notice is that they chose to go with the Street Fighter VI iteration; which makes sense, it’s his most recent version. I think that SNK’s art style does every well with complex character designs (mainly those who have a lot of layers and details) and seems to be less pleasing when it’s more simple. I say this because I believe his default costume in Street Fighter VI looks better than his classic costume here; and mainly it’s due to how much he’s wearing and the different small details than his classic red gi.
As far as his fighting style, he looks GREAT! The adaptation is spot on I feel; seeing things like his Standing Fierce, Shoryureppa, and Jinrai kick gives me high hopes. Also, you’ve got the demonstration of how Ken functions within the Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves mechanics; such as the OD Shoryuken into the OD Tatsumaki Senpuu Kyaku into the REV Blow. Demonstrating a classic Street Fighter VI combo, they even show Dragon Lash into REV Art.
Overall, I think this trailer shows a very promising adaptation of Ken which FEELS straight out of Street Fighter VI with changes to him based on how Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves plays and operates; I think it’s quite faithful. Considering Ken is also a free character (along with all the first season DLC for this game), I think many will come back to check him out and could drive up interest; I think it was smart saving Ken for the middle of the pack and Chun-Li towards the end to revive interest within the game after so long.
