【Ninja Gaiden 4】Announce Trailer & Impressions

If you’re like me, you understand what Ninja Gaiden is from the fighting game series “Dead or Alive” where Ryu Hayabusa is one of the staple characters. However, other characters like Ayane are also featured within the Ninja Gaiden series.

One of my favorite genre of games are Hack n’ Slash, particularly Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. While I tried Ninja Gaiden III, I wasn’t a fan of its combat system and thus, found it unappealing despite how others might have loved or hated Razor’s Edge. During the Developer Direct for Xbox, we finally get a look at Team Ninja’s upcoming game, Ninja Gaiden 4. Get the trailer and my impressions below.

  IMPRESSIONS

The beginning of the trailer seems as if they’re giving a prelude to the story; this could also be a simple synopsis of what happened during previous Ninja Gaiden games, but since I did not play them, I’m quite unsure in that regard. Though, with them saying that this “Young Dragon’s” plot was foiled by the hand of “One Ninja”, I’m going to assume so since that singular Shinobi was probably none other than Ryu Hayabusa.

Before the PLATINUMGAMES logo is shown, we are greeted with a new Ninja, Raven, who will seemingly act as the protagonist. In fact, within the trailer he actually seems to fight Ryu Hayabusa at some point, reminiscent of how Nero and Dante met in Devil May Cry 4. Though, to be fair, it seems that both ninjas are acquainted with each other where as neither Dante nor Nero knew each other from the onset. While it appears as though Ryu and Raven have different mentions and priorities, I wouldn’t be surprised if they are forced to either temporarily team-up, or realize that they’re both on the same side the entire time.

The environments reminds me a little of what I’ve seen from Ghostrunner, with a kind of neo-tokyo theme. There seems to be a hint of platforming and traversal, such as rail grinding and wallrunning.

The fighting seems to be bloody and cinematic, full of glory kills and fast-paced combat. The blade that Raven uses seems to be a standard katana but morphs into some blood-infused odachi. I see aerial special moves, parries, and grounded special attacks. No idea what the finishing move will be, but it reminds me a lot of Tenchu: Stealth Assassins. Either way, I am willing to give this a try due to the fact that Ninja Gaiden is a legendary series and I really do want to like it, and the trailer looks interesting if nothing else.
