Since Devil May Cry was first announced by Netflix, I’ve been waiting patiently to see what they could do with it. This is primarily because I’m a massive fan of the video game series, and I was impressed by how Netflix handled the Castlevania‘s adaptation; so I knew the ability to deliver beautifully drawn characters, excellent animated combat sequences, and deliver a good storyline were all within their power. However, that didn’t mean that lightning could strike twice and they were willing to put that same love and care into Devil May Cry.
The voice of Dante being Nero’s voice actor from the official games, Dante looking somewhat different due to his hairstyle that’s more fluffed up than usual, and animation which seemed questionable in the early trailer had me quite…skeptical. Now that we get to see the Opening Credits, it’s time to see what they’ve got cooked up for us and to see if they’ve managed to alleviate any of that anxiety.
The very first thing that confused me was the song choice, “Urban Assault Vehicle” by Limp Bizkit. This song was widely known as the intro music used by The Undertaker in WWF/WWE, and is of a genre called “Nu Metal”. This put me off IMMEDIATELY due to the fact that the Devil May Cry games all features shades of Rock and Metal, and while Nu Metal technically can fit, I never associated any type of Rap with Devil May Cry (Well, maybe DmC: Devil May Cry but that’s completely different). Don’t get me wrong, I actually like the song and have the remix on my playlist which features DMX, Redman, and Method Man. Still, this song selection gave me instant fear on how Netflix might handle things; but the more I watched the trailer…the more I actually became a fan of the choice and felt like it might’ve the chaotic nature of Dante and over-the-top theme of Devil May Cry.
While they have many different things within the trailer; Nelo Angelo from the very game , Strawberry Sundaes reminiscent of the first anime, Mundus, etc. I feel like they went with his most popular incarnation, which is Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening. So I figure that the series is going to possibly be a blend of everything together and telling an original story, rather than trying to focus on the official timeline of Devil May Cry. Netflix would have to worry about the games, the original anime, the manga, and side material which was incorporated within the main plot; I feel like they should do something completely stand alone and original and tie canonical elements together within their own unique fashion.
As far as opening scenes go, they did an excellent job. It’s stylistic, which is something that’s synonymous with Devil May Cry. They show glimpses of possible future events and where storytelling might lead, while having an excellent song choice, despite what I originally went with.
All right Netflix; you have my attention!
