【Wistoria: Wand & Sword】S2 E10 Impressions

A lot happened during this episode of Wistoria: Wand & Sword, and ultimately I am still a bit confused by some of the happenings. Overall, I think it was a great, but I think the problem is my understanding of the core of Will’s power.

You see, Will was not immediately given a faction due to him needing to be acknowledged by the tower as a whole. I found this to be incredibly stupid as it feels as though the criteria for is and isn’t allowed is up to the Magia Vander or the one of the High Mages of any given faction. I get that Will himself is an outlier due to him being a “Sword” and not being able to conjure magic from within — but that should have been of very little importance.

Will previously defeated a rampaging monster which anyone who fought with traditional magic would have fallen to. Also, while he was not able to utilize magic from within himself, he was still able to make use of other’s abilities to fuel his own. I feel like his contributions to the efforts on the day of resealing the tower’s barrier and his unique ability to channel other’s magic would have made him a shoe-in for any faction — especially since casualties would have skyrocketed if not for his intervention.

Back in Episode 9 when Will delved into his past and memories, it was confusing to say the least. WHY did that particular memory unlock his ability to summon magic from within himself? I get that during a crisis situation it looked like he used Wis from his own power, and that he probably needed to remember that feeling, but I do not think it was properly conveyed.

Episode 10 at least did a great job of explaining that Will’s use of Wis from his own power is dramatically weaker than when he absorbs another’s magic. However, regardless of it being weaker, it is still above what could be consider intermediate-level magic. We also saw him absorb Zeo’s one-shot kill attack by halving the impact by absorbing the element. This means that Will does not completely nullify magic attacks against himself, but tanks half of the blast and converts the rest into his own power.

Though, the conversation between Cerridwen and Finn makes it known that Will is not even close to his potential yet — that he is sufficient for the time being but still has much to learn. We also learn quite a lot regarding Cerridwen as the ageless witch, which is more-than-likely signaling that she is the one who Finn was developing someone who can use the 5th element for. Interesting.

There are a couple of things I also wish to address regarding Elfaria. It seems that she did not simply abandon Will, rather, she restrained herself from helping more than usual by adhering to the promise she made. Sure, she was able to delicately offer our protagonist aid when necessary, but overall she waited for him to do the heavy lifting on his own. I find her affection for him endearing, but also felt as though she was too lax when it came to Will needing to prove himself apart from everyone else once he made it within the tower (even considering his prowess within the previous large-scale battle).

The ending seems to be a fight between Zeo and Elfaria for who gets Will — I find this to be stupid considering Elfaria was trying to claim him from the very beginning and everyone already realizes that. While Elfaria is a Magia Vander, it feels as though she does not possess the respect and authority normally given to someone of her rank. Elfaria was able to scout Julius immediately without any further proof of his skills or ability and Will must fight those homunculi which can only be destroyed by magic and immediately tank a one-hit kill attack from Zero.

I am looking forward to see Elfaria’s genius next match, and what happens next.
