Evolution 2024 was last weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. Anyone who is familiar with the famed fighting game tournament knows we are going to get new information regarding the biggest fighting games available; one of which is GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE-.
While it was leaked beforehand, we got to see what we could look forward to in Season 4. While no official gameplay of any new characters was shown, the fact we got to see everyone in advance means no more fan speculations about who is coming, some hype is gone but new hype was created within the process. Let’s check out the trailer and discuss.
IMPRESSIONS
My first impressions happened to be towards the “Team of 3” mode. A 3 on 3 Guilty Gear mode can be fun, since there haven’t been a ton of fighting games which allows friends to team up and take down someone (which is one of the reasons I really liked TEKKEN TAG Tournament 2, Street Fighter x TEKKEN, and the Super Smash Bros. fighting games). However, from someone who has gotten to play the mode already, this was pretty much a disappointment.
The new “Exclusive” color isn’t going to get me hype about much. Mainly because colors and cosmetics I feel should always be available for everyone else to purchase. However, you can’t fret too much about these things as it’s an obvious incentive for people to purchase the Season Pass in advance to access the color, and it’s not like cosmetics are ever Pay-to-Win (unless you’re Apex Legends).
I’m pretty hype for new stages, as GG often features impressive backdrops. The biggest issue however, is that we don’t really get to see any of the stages; they’re all black and white and in very sketchy states. So while I understand that there are multiple on the way, it seems I’ll have to wait to get a really good luck at what they have planned.
As far as characters, we get Dizzy in October of this year. My favorite GG characters are Jam, A.B.A., Dizzy, THAT MAN (Asuka), and Elphelt. Considering I’ve gotten everyone back now except Jam, I’m cool with that. However, while I appreciate how they implemented A.B.A. and Asuka, I am not a fan of how they did Elphelt or Bedman. So while I am happy Dizzy is back, the verdict won’t be in until we actually get to play as her.
Venom is cool, I’ve never played as him but I know many are looking forward to him and his pool ball shenanigans. The new character I am assuming is from the upcoming GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE- “anime”, which seems more to me like the same type of animation as their story mode, just in a more comprehensive anime format. While this character, Unika, looks interesting; we will only learn more once the anime is out. The very last person we’ll be getting is Lucy from Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners. Many people said that Edgerunners was the best anime of the year it came out, on top of it being what singlehandedly managed to revive interest in Cyberpunk 2077 after CD Project Red messed up its launch. I need to watch it to gauge my hype.
Overall, not bad. I’m looking forward to the next season of GG Strive and hopefully can actually pull myself into playing it this time. Lol.
