Some of you might see this and try to figure out exactly what you’re looking at. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3: Community Edition is essentially a modded version of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 which adds in new characters from both franchises. Some of them are built from the ground up with custom models, some are amalgamations of various in-game moves and effects repurposed into a new character, and some are imports from Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite.
This is the definitive trailer for the character’s revealed in “Character Reveal 2”. So let’s check it out and I’ll give you my impressions on what we see here.
So, rather than give you everything in a single paragraph, I’m going to use bullet points and talk about each and every character and what I think about them; I figure that this is the best way to go about doing it.
- Demitri — Originally from Vampire Savior (Darkstalkers), I have never been entirely fond of this character but understand he’s a classic as far as CAPCOM is concerned. I think he was recreated well as far as his aesthetic, but I dislike the fact he has fireballs similar to both Morrigan and Firebrand. Also, I think some of his animations look a bit goofy, but I know they’re done in a way to remain faithful to the source material. Overall, well done but definitely not my type of character.
- Robbie Reyes — I feel like this character had inspiration taken from his counterpart in Marvel TOKON: Fighting Souls as a few of the moves look very similar; including the fact that he drives away in his car and summons it for a super. Besides that, I’m not really feeling the purple fire upon his head, though I suppose it needs to be done to better differentiate him from the original Ghost Rider. Looks way more close-ranged than the original, but definitely well done. I do think they need to tone done his corner loops, but beyond that, I think he looks formidable and the variation I’d probably play.
- Professor X — This character has some interesting concepts, but looks pretty goofy in how some of the combos form. However, I feel like he provides sauce to his team with the variety of moves and the flow of his combat. I do hate that he seems to be made within the same ideology as Dark Phoenix; in that he gets resurrected fully once he gets 5 bars and gains a more powerful/alternate version which has new moves and greater lethality. I’d probably play this character for fun however, as he does have an interesting tool kit. Also, I absolutely love the voice change when he goes into his alternative form (forgive me if it has a name, I’m not privy to Professor X lore outside of somethings with Onslaught).
- Cable — This character is someone I wanted to come back in the originally Marvel vs Capcom 3, but was very afraid he would not play the same since he centers heavily around runaway, incoming guard crush, and dumping meter for repeated uses of the Air Hyper Viper Beam super. Here, they actually give him greater combo-ability with his other super and time grenade. They do showcase him using all 5 bars with his Air Hyper Viper Beam, but the beam itself is aesthetically displeasing. I really wish they spent more time making the beam look better. Yes, I know it’s more so a function and they are doing the best they can, but it definitely looks rather bad. Still, they were inventive in how they put this character together and I saw he’s an improvement upon the old one by building new routes.
- Dudley — This character was made EXCEPTIONALLY well. While I am worried about so many uppercuts being used in a single combo, his overall structure and presentation are true to the original. I love the fact he has Machine Gun Blow within the air that’s a ground bounce and combo tool, while his supers are animated perfectly. This character feels so much like his counterpart it feels like CAPCOM themselves would have designed his moveset very similar to what we see now.
Overall, I think these are all pretty interesting, even though realistically I’d only use Professor X, Cable, and Dudley. I think the love and passion consistently poured into this community edition of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is a sign of just how much the FGC embraces this game. Definitely looking to see more tournaments and footage of people enjoying themselves in the future!
