Netflix is known for using their wealth to adapt some anime — some good, some bad. I have never heard of Jimoto Saiko! However, this trailer makes me wonder just what the hell is going on. Check out the official teaser below, then let’s discuss what the hell is going on here.
This teaser trailer actually appeared on my X/Twitter timeline, and I had no idea at all what to expect. The thumbnail itself is relatively innocent and you do not really think anything of it. It feels like it’s going to be a cute anime featuring two girls, one who’s probably carefree and one who is the more responsible one — a familiar anime trope. Though, upon closer inspection you see LSD tablets falling out of one girls’ pocket, a million ear piercings, a cigarette in a girl’s mouth, an old factory, and even graffiit being present on the wall.
First off, let’s get into the description that Netflix has left on its video. It should also be noted that the original work is by an artist known as “usagi”.
“Initially serialized on social media, “Jimoto Saiko!” has trended for its story set in a place that feels like a distillation of everything wrong in the world, all beneath a cute visual exterior. Now, this comic sensation is getting an anime adaptation!
With animation produced by MAPPA (“Jujutsu Kaisen,” “Attack on Titan: The Final Season”), the series will stream worldwide, only on Netflix.
No matter how tough they’ve had it, these girls keep on boasting “our hometown rules!” — even though they’ve never set foot outside it. Don’t miss this animated spectacle!“
One thing I want to highlight about this teaser trailer is the song. I have no idea who the artist is (yet), but they did an excellent job with a fantastic, catchy tune which works opposite of the chaotic and unpredictable nature of the video. The atmosphere it adds is a reason I’ve watched this trailer countless times and have shown it off to friends to get their reaction.
I think the most surprising thing about this trailer is the fact that drugs are used — that’s very uncommon in anime to me. Smoking? Sure, that’s one thing. However, we very clearly get pills, marijuana, cocaine, and who knows what else. We see violence in the way of the main two girls beating up another duo, someone dropping another person from height, and that’s just within this trailer. Not to mention we see gear that could be used for a robbery, someone firing a gun, and what appears to be the effects of addiction. Really, this anime seems incredibly unhinged.
I’m definitely looking forward to seeing exactly what this anime is about and how absurd it can be. If Netflix wanted to get maximum impact, they’ve managed to find it!
