For those of you unaware, the largest fighting game on the planet is currently about to take place (Evolution Championship Series: Las Vegas). Coming there to present its first public playable version is the anticipated fighting game, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Currently they’ve been posting a few things on their X/Twitter regarding the game, so I’m going to compile that information here along with anything new that might come across; so stay tuned!

My first impressions upon seeing this made me realize that this really isn’t MARVEL VS CAPCOM. To be fair, my initial impressions for this is much less hype now; thinking perhaps that maybe Marvel Games should have just saw CAPCOM’s current track record and gave them another shot.
The biggest issue is that I’ve come to expect absolute insanity when playing a tag versus title featuring Marvel due to the legacy starting with MARVEL VS CAPCOM 2: New Age of Heroes. Also, the fact that ULTIMATE MARVEL VS CAPCOM 3, is still being played TO THIS DAY and is massively popular despite the number of people who actually play it (spectators are always high in number).
MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a BEAUTIFUL game, but it seems especially tame so far. Not having access to all your characters immediately is an issue I don’t really care about; also, what’s to stop you from just going absolutely crazy with a single character and not needing to switch out? I don’t like having to progressively unlock my assists and switch options. I also don’t like that there seems not to be a raw tag to allow me to simply take damage for the sake of switching in. I don’t like we can’t pick our assists per character, and instead have to put them within a dedicated spot which can get jumbled as we move around our team.
Right now, the game is amazing but my hype is definitely down on it. I don’t like the increasing gauge via The King of Fighters that grows per K.O. or wall break/stick mechanics, the fact that EX Moves are similar to that found in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising series, and that the game seems so tame.
Overall, we’ll see when we get more gameplay from EVO, but I’m not as pumped as I once was.
