Street Fighter 6 has revealed its Year 3 characters, showcasing everyone that’s currently available. Honestly, with Elena releasing not too long ago, I figured they’d wait for this grand reveal during Evolution Las Vegas. However, I feel that perhaps CAPCOM realizes that a lot of the thunder from their newest DLC characters has been stolen from the announcement of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, so perhaps they needed a way to get the conversation back within Street Fighter 6‘s favor. Then again, it was shown during Summer Game Fest, so perhaps it was already planned out and I’m reading too much into it.
The reveal was done by fighting game favorite and professional wrestler Kenny Omega. CAPCOM had him dress up as each of the characters that will be released during Season 3, including both C.Viper and Ingrid, which I found to be hilarious. The trailer and my feelings on these characters will be after the trailer.
The trailer in itself wasn’t bad at all, but we need to get down to talking about these characters; Sagat, C.Viper, Alex, and Ingrid. These are NOT the characters I was hoping for, and the only one I have even a modicum of interest in happens to be C.Viper. However, considering how simple things tend to be in most modern fighting games, I doubt she’s the execution monster with seismo cancels that existed in Street Fighter IV.
However, once I started to think about things more, I realized that things could be interesting. While I applauded Year 2 for adding in Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui, I have no interest at all in playing these characters within a Street Fighter game, despite how well they’ve been adapted and how good they look in their gameplay. I’ve never had an interest in Sagat, but Alex was always I found to be cool simply because she’s a grappler; just not my style. However, considering that I currently main Manon and could use another grabber, Alex could fit that mold perfectly. C.Viper was someone whom I really liked the design of, and used her in both Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs Capcom 3. Ingrid was always a black sheep considering the game she spawned from, but her design within this game is very appealing and the changes to her kit could make her the dark horse out of everyone (hence why they kept her last).
At the end of this trailer we’re also treated to some Sagat gameplay; my guess is that he’ll be releasing sometime after Evolution Las Vegas with a more in-depth look at his gameplay. I am still not a fan of his, but many people are happy with The King of Muay Thai’s return; so there’s that.
Overall, I’m not too big of a fan of this season since I would’ve preferred the likes of Makoto, Sean, Sakura, and R.Mika. Still, not too bad since I can see myself trying 3 of 4 characters with a possibility of liking Alex and Ingrid enough to actually main them.
