A week or so late with covering this trailer, but I’m not going to miss out on a single one! We are introduced to two mainstays within The King of Fighters series, Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia. We know that the inclusion of these two were nearly guaranteed when Yuri Sakazaki, Ryo’s younger sister and Robert’s love interest, was one of the characters in a previous trailer. These two need no real introduction, so let’s go ahead and take a look at what their KOFXV counterpart looks like.
Before I start discussing characters, I will say that I am happy that they gave us actual gameplay of how the matches might look when we see players playing against each other…and I am not impressed. I feel like the game is very ugly to watch. It’s not nearly as great as The King of Fighters XIII and definitely not something that will immediately grab your attention for eSports. I think the particle effects still need a ton of work, but I also feel like the blocking, fluidity, and the impact of hits need work.
As far as their looks go, I’m fine with Robert as he seems to build off of his KOFXIV counterpart, but Ryo is still not to my liking. I prefer Ryo who’s a lot more thin with the very awkward stance we remember back from other KOF’s like 99” and 11. Not much of a fan of the stance he was given in this game, as well as KOF XIII and XIV. That’s just on me though.
The characters look pretty true to what we expect from them gameplay wise; Robert seems to deal with mostly kick attacks while Ryo is content to do what we expect a Shoto’ish character would do. So while they do not try to reinvent the wheel, I wish we got something different from each of them that makes us feel like it’s not the same old same old, but that may be present within their combo paths.
On another note, I am 100% surprised that the “Art of Fighting” team is composed of King instead of Yuri. I feel like this means that Yuri will be joining Mai Shiranui on the “Team Women’s Fighters”, which typically has Mai and King. I am guessing Yuri will be swapping with King within this instance, but one cannot be too sure.
