Today I found out that legendary mangaka, Dr. Kentaro Miura, died May 6th of “acute aortic dissection”. I found this out through a tweet of the actual Japanese twitter for Berserk, which I have placed here with an link on the image that will take you to it. I figured out what it meant through google translation.
Quickly looking it up, I found out exactly what “acute aortic dissection” is.
- Acute Aortic Dissection — An aortic dissection is a serious condition in which the inner layer of the aorta, the large blood vessel branching off the heart, tears. Blood surges through the tear, causing the inner and middle layers of the aorta to separate (dissect). If the blood-filled channel ruptures through the outside aortic wall, aortic dissection is often fatal.
As someone who’s introduction into anime included Berserk, it is hard to see the creator of such a legendary and well-known manga go. More so, it hurts because it was never finished and we will never see the original vision for it due to the death of Dr. Kentaro. Sure, if he set out plans we could see something similar to the Boruto (originally) or Dragon Ball Super series where someone who can mimic his style can finish it, but it’s not the same thing as it being done by the original artist’s hand.
Those around the world will certainly miss such a legendary artist who’s style, story, and impact has given enjoyment to millions of anime and manga fans around the world. Dr. Kentaro has given to us memories we will never forget, and bestowed upon us a world that was both brutal and beautiful. Rest in peace, and thank you for all you have done for the hobby and passion I hold so dear.
