Everyone understands Insomniac’s amazing vision when it comes to super hero video games due to their amazing success with Marvel’s Spider-Man and the sequel. I first fell in love with them due to their work on Sunset Overdrive (a game I feel is overlooked to this day). We all saw a preview for their Wolverine game some years ago, but then it went quiet for a significant period of time….until now.
Below we get the first gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, and I’ll be sure to give you my impressions when it comes to this game right below it. Let’s check it out!~
If you’re into comics or know anything about Wolverine, you know that he’s not the gentle type. Wolverine is amazingly old due to his healing factor, has lost most of his memory, and has been a soldier who has fought in many wars. Killing comes naturally and easy to him, with the phrase “I’m the best at what I do, and what I do isn’t pretty”. Considering the friendly nature of Spider-Man games, I was worried that Wolverine might also aim for a rating to appeal to a wider audience.
Apparently that worry was unjustified, as Insomniac Games delivers like it has always done.
The opening scene is pretty brutal with Wolverine already killing someone. This is par for the course as those adamantium claws aren’t just for show. What surprised however, is the fact that he cuts off an arm, stabs this person multiple times, then RIPS THEM IN HALF. The ferocity shown is definitely his character.
One of the things that’s shown is his mentality and demeanor. Wolverine is someone who is very conflicted simply because of who he is. A tragic past, incomplete memory, and the tendency to be looked down upon translates to him having to do things he doesn’t want to be, but has to. Being willing to kill and take lives is something he might’ve made peace with, despite the fact he knows that he’d prefer not to. It’s a way of saying that fate constantly pushes him to be the way he is, and he’s simply accepted it.
Within the trailer we also see a few other characters, such as Mystique and Omega Red. While we see Wolverine in civilian clothes, we also see the X-Men costume he’s more well known for. While killing and taking lives is something I’m sure the X-Men want to avoid, it’s also core to who Wolverine is. I’m wondering how everything will pan out and the type of story that Insomniac Games will display here for someone who’s such an anti-hero who’s often conflicted by his own existence.
Definitely going to pick this up Day 1 if I have the opportunity.
