【Anime Trailer】Fist of the North Star

For those of you who aren’t aware, FIST OF THE NORTH STAR is a classic anime which inspired MANY of the anime we know and love today. The most prominent one I personally am a fan of is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure with Kenshiro’s influence clearly being seen in Jonathan Joestar and the fighting done within the second arc, Phantom Blood.

FIST OF THE NORTH STAR has spawned many games, merchandise, and lives within infamy to many anime fans. This trailer they are giving is supposedly bringing it back to to the forefront with a brand new anime. Well, without further ado, let’s check out the PV and I’ll give my impressions on it!

  IMPRESSIONS

As someone who is a fan of Shonen Anime and considers myself an otaku, I have actually never seen this classic series. Mainly because the graphics were completely outdated by the time I became interested in anime as a teenager. Smoother animation, different art style, and simply a different time made the dated anime unappealing for me to watch. Sure, I respected it as a classic, but never got around to giving it a try like I did others like Berserk and Akira.

The first thing that I was worried about was that the animation happened to be 3D. Anyone who loved Berserk and the original anime was absolutely torn to bits by the lackluster, poor excuse of a remake they did for that beloved series in 3D. Hell, they did it a few times over and each and every time it looked like dogshit to say the least. It was something I wasn’t a fan of and personally just felt like they either needed to do it right, or they did not need to do it at all. Though, I do know that not every series can get a proper remake like Hellsing Ultimate and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood; but a guy can dream.

The first thing I do notice is that they actually put some effort into the 3D. Sure it’s probably not going to be Guilty Gear levels of 3D animation, but they definitely emphasis a unique style using the shadows and lighting. The high contrast style is very gritty and fits well with the dated character designs and aesthetic of a Mad Max style atmosphere.

The voice acting is also pretty good; I haven’t heard much yet, but Kenshiro’s voice is nice and deep when he utters the iconic line “OMAE WA MO SHINDERU!!”. Also, his voice is very high pitched whenever he’s fighting. As I saw someone state, I wonder if they used two different voice actors; one for his normal voice and one when he’s fighting. If not, that’s some AMAZING range by the voice actor Shunsuke Takeuchi.

I am cautiously optimistic when it comes to FIST OF THE NORTH STAR. On one hand, I’ve never seen the anime before and it’d be nice to fill in that ignorance with the actual show. However, I also want it to live up to the legends and expectations that many have as fans of this series. It’s very iconic in SO many ways and inspired an entire generation of mangaka and anime fans alike. Here’s hoping!
