Waifu Crush Wednesday — Hatsune Miku

Waifu Crush Wednesday is modeled after the popular “#WCW” or “Women Crush Wednesday” that got famous after trending on social media.

This editorial series focuses upon female characters in gaming, anime, and manga that I happen to like in one form or another.  I will do my best to explain my affinity for that particular character.

 HATSUNE MIKU

 WHO’S MIKU?
Hatsune Miku is known because of the voice synthesizing program known as “VOCALOID”.  Officially, she is 16-years-old and is voiced by Saki Fujita 藤田咲.  Despite what some people may know, she is the 7th VOCALOID overall, but the very first member of the “Character Vocal Series” (which also features Kagamine Rin and Len, and finally Megurine Luka).

Despite never having an anime of her own, Hatsune Miku has been in thousands of songs (original and fan covers), appears in live virtual concerts, has plenty of statues to choose from that are still being made, has her own rhythm video games, and even inspired the voice of Puppycat from the show “Bee and Puppycat“.  Suffice to say, Hatsune Miku has tangible accomplishments despite being a fictional 2D character.  You would be hard-pressed to find any fan of anime and/or manga who does not know her name or recognize her unique sound.

 ADORATION
I first came across Hatsune Miku back when I was randomly browsing YouTube as a teenager, the song I stumbled across was a VOCALOID version of the song “Ievan Polkka”, most notably after the song got popular due to a Finnish quartet known as “Loituma“.  Later we got different versions featuring the VOCALOIDs Kagamine Rin and Len, but I still always preferred Hatsune Miku since that is what I heard and fell in love with.

As time began to pass, I began to listen to more-and-more VOCALOID music with it eventually filling up my playlists.  Some of them were covers (such as “Phantom of the Opera”) or original songs (such as “Miku”).  Though there were many different songs, I did not find many I actually did not like (though I did like some more than others).  Hell I even found covers of songs that had absolutely no lyrics that I adored, such as “Forest Maze” from Super Mario RPG or “Metropolis Plant” from Sonic the Hedgehog 2.  Basically, anything that this VOCALOID touched seemed to turn into amazing music the likes of which my ears could not get enough of, but even more than that was Miku herself.

The twin-tailed turquoise haired girl became the embodiment of feel-good music to me and the many illustrations of Miku was able to put a face on that experience.  Unlike the Nitroplus mascot character Super Sonico, who I also liked, Hatsune Miku seemed to become famous based off her image being attributed to her music and not because she was a sexually appealing anime character.  While this is quite the small thing, it gives a vision of cuteness and innocence which makes the character more appealing to me, it triggers the right kind of feeling when listening to a song synthesized with her voice or seeing the character represented in the many forms of media she participates in.

My current love for her was resparked when all of that magic came soaring back through my ears in an unexpected way.  Today, I was playing some BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle since I was sharpening up on my Ragna/Makoto team synergy, when I noticed that my spotify had a playlist called “Anamanaguchi”, music I recognized because of their involved with the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game‘s soundtrack.  However, this playlist had music I had never heard before and one of them happening to be called “Miku” featuring Hatsune Miku… and I absolutely adored it!  I began to hum it throughout the entire day, sing it on the microphone as I played with other people, and even typed it repeatedly on the RNTS Discord “I’m thinking Miku, Miku, ooo wee ooo!”.

Right now, my two biggest goals are trying to find a Hatsune Miku statue I really like and buying it and attending one of her VR concerts.  I know she had one here not too long ago (it was at the Bomb Factory in July here in Dallas, Texas), but I am really hoping she comes back soon so I can save up the money to actually go.  Here she is dancing to my favorite original song of her’s with an absolutely amazing dance to accompany it.
