【Avatar Legends: TFG】Toph Beifong Trailer

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game has revealed a new character trailer for Toph Beifong; the blind Earth Bender everyone loved from the original series. I’ve never watched any of the Avatar series, so I’m largely unfamiliar with the character aside from things like means, episode snippets, and what I’ve experienced through various other media. However, I know that she’s supposed to be comically witty and sharp, and a fierce fighter despite the fact she’s completely blind.

We get to see what the developers have cooked up for us with Toph, and I’ll tell what I feel from strictly a fighting game fan’s and observer’s standpoint.

 TOPH BEIFONG TRAILER

  IMPRESSIONS

From the very beginning she’s taunting her opponent, which I think is insane considering the fact she can’t actually see them; just feel them with the earth. No idea if this is a mechanic of the game unique to every attacker, but being able to slip opponent’s moves via a dodge is incredible useful for reads. Hell; Toph got a full JUMP PUNISH from it!

Something else I seen is her ability to create WALLS MID-SCREEN. This means she’s able to get corner combos anywhere on the screen, something we’ve seen with Aganos in Killer Instinct. This is an incredibly strong ability that puts your opponent on the defensive and can limit their recovery options. It’s an incredibly strong ability.

Also, seems you can modify her abilities in three different ways.

  • Boulder: Armored Flow Movement — This gives her armor when she’s using her “flow” mechanic to get in on an opponent. This can make it harder to zone her, limit her with normals, or discourage her from occupying space. Definitely good for aggressive people who want to get close quickly and skip some of the neutral.
  • Badgermole; Better Earth Pillars — We would need an actual understanding of how regular earth pillars function before being able to really deduce what “better” means here. What I am thinking from the video however, is that perhaps it’s able to OTG downed opponents and provide a higher wall so you cannot jump over them in neutral.
  • Hippo: Better Platform Ride — I’m guessing this is a movement option which doubles as an ability to extend combos. The “better platform” part may mean an ability to extend combos in a way you normally cannot and thus, is able to create opportunities that would normally be impossible otherwise.

I’ll be honest in saying that I was not at all interested in Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game beforehand, even though it got so much praise compared to MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls‘ beta when they were both in circulation simultaneously. Toph is my type of character, and someone I also played in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and really loved her fighting style within that game; so I have a bit of a soft spot for this character in general. If there is another beta and it comes to PC, I’ll definitely be trying it out if she’s in the character rotation.

Well. I’ve managed to be pulled in by this game now, so good job developers! Toph Beifong looks like an amazing addition!
