【GBVSR】Galleon Gameplay Trailer & Impressions

I don’t know much about Galleon personally, I don’t actually play the Granblue mobile or browser game. The only characters I am familiar with are those already within Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, and those who appeared in Granblue Fantasy: Relink. From the Granblue Fantasy Wiki page, Galleon’s description is as follows.

Earth personified—the dragon who takes on the title of Galleon the Gold. Incensed by how the landmass occupied by all who live under the skies is so much more miniscule than it was originally meant to be, she laments the hardships that skydwellers are forced to endure. Harboring compassion as bounteous as the earth itself, she chooses to live beside mankind to better understand their plight and to change along with the world.

This character seems beneficent and empathetic. The appearance they take on seems to be a mix between all human races, possessing the height of Humans, busts of Draph women and horns of Draph men, ears of Harvins and Erunes (don’t know how to pronounce that, so hopefully what I’m thinking). The character to me looks quite beautiful, and I especially love when they have floating matter behind them which reminds me of divinity, such as Versusia’s.

Also “The Golden Galleon” was a novel written by Robert Leighton in the late 19th century and is a historical novel. Funny enough, I also remember a “Golden Galleon” from an episode of Scooby Doo. Apparently it appeared in episode 108 of “The Scooby Doo Show” called “No-Face Zombie Chase Case”, and was haunted by the “No-Face Zombie”. While it doesn’t have anything at all to do with Granblue Versus, I just thought it’d be funny to mention it.

 GAMEPLAY TRAILER

  IMPRESSIONS

Generally I play this game, and most other Japanese games of origin, within their native language. However, the trailer I first heard for Galleon happened to be in English. The dub is VERY GOOD, and immediately I get a calm and comforting voice from Galleon saying, “Even in this veil of tears, blessed be the children of the skies” and “Prepare to witness the might of Galleon the Gold”. Definitely giving off protective mommy vibes.

I say this because they also give her very sexy animations which give off a sultry feeling. The super at 55 seconds shows her slowly lick her lips from right-to-left, giving a “You look tasty” or “I’m going to savor this” feeling, and immediately after she says “You were wonderful”. The animation after this is probably the most gooner shit ever for me. The way she sits down and slowly crosses her legs sends shivers down my spine. I’ve always been weak to women with thick thighs crossing their legs, and I know plenty of people also are. While Galleon appears wise and motherly, they also make her seem very sultry and suggestive; a mature sex appeal. However, they also made sure to let you know that she’s a powerful entity who’s simply a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Now, before I get into talking about the trailer, I want to lean in a bit to her archetype. Essentially from what was mentioned at EVO Japan, is that Galleon is a grappler-esque character. We can tell this from her opening move against Djeeta and also the Anti-Air grab which was shown off after an air teleport from Cagliostro. While Galleon does appear to have some zoning-type moves, it seem she’s more-so a hybrid character.

At least, I believe so. Y’see, while I see a variety of grabs and hit-grabs, it’s not like I see anything that could be considered an oppressive-zoning style. Vikala is meant to be mostly keep-away but get bested by people like Belial, Metera, and even Eustace when it comes to the potency and frequency of projectiles, including their Ultimate counterparts. With Galleon, I saw a very slow projectile in the way of a falling boulder around 44 seconds before the Cagliostro grab, and I assume it’s the same one in the blockstring at 1:08 (which is probably plus), and in the combo at 1:16.

While this character might have some long-range moves, they don’t appear to be nearly the speed or annoyance of someone like fairy. We know the circles she places on the ground are setups for where she makes her boulders fall; but no idea if she has to summon them herself or if they’re also on a timer of some sort. The move which summons the giant hand wall bounces with the Ultimate and allows for follow-ups from mid-screen while the H-Version seems to only allow it in the corner due to how short the wall bounce actually is. Also, she seems to have the ability to bait with a teleport, which also seems to be used to confirm into some combos.

Overall, Galleon’s play style to me just seems like a grappler who also has the ability to punish opponents who try to jump or weasel themselves out of pressure. The circles on the ground are zones she can drop boulders on, controlling that area or at least being at advantage while she chases down an opponent. A variety of grabs means she gives anyone she’s fighting additional layers on the mental stack while worrying about universal options. No idea if she has an invincible or meter-cost reversal, but nothing appears like it outside of her SBA or SSBA.

Speaking of, her animations appear pretty Godlike as well. Shifting the entire background for grabs is amazing to me, and the use of earth elements in attacks is phenomenal. Out of most elements, I always felt like Earth felt the strongest due to its nature, but it never looked the coolest. The yellow elements with things like the hands, boulders, and explosions are amazing. I’m also curious as to her Super Skybound Art, as Galleon is shown within her true dragon form after trapping them in the equivalent of Pain’s “Planetary Devastation” from Naruto. Though, I feel they used Belial here because it’s probably a command grab (similar to Avatar Belials), and the size of the character vs the size of the opponent is relatively the same.

Overall, I was really hoping for a character I could connect with and Galleon checks off a lot of boxes for me. It’s a female character (which I mostly main), she has grapple capabilities, she’s extremely cute, has a great toolkit and looks fun. While I main Vikala, I’ll definitely be switching over if this Dragon Mommy suits my sensibilities. We’ll see!
