Considering I was never a massive SNK fan, I only played Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition, and thus never got around to playing Garou: Mark of the Wolves. I have no idea who Hokutomaru is, but can immediately tell that he sports a mixture of moves from Andy Bogard and Mai Shiranui. While I believe both Andy and Mai use different styles of Ninjitsu based upon Shiranui principles, it seems as though Hokutomaru embodies a blend of the two staple characters.
Considering we are getting Andy Bogard as one of the first DLC characters alongside Ken Masters, it makes me wonder exactly how unique he’ll feel since Hokutomaru barrows a couple of signature moves; like his Zen-eiken, Kuuha Dan, and even the Super Special Move Zetsu: Hishou Ken. However, it seems he’s unique enough in how he plays and strings together moves with his projectiles and air movement. I feel like he’ll be different enough from Andy to be able to prefer one or the other based on how they play rather than who’s officially “better” when the dust settles.
Hokutomaru’s aesthetic is pretty cool, as I believe he’s well designed. His moveset is quite unique, and I’m also wondering about whether-or-not if he considers himself something of the unofficial child of Andy & Mai (though, I don’t know the story of Mark of the Wolves). While I doubt I’ll pick up this character considering Andy is on his way out, it’s still pretty cool to see a student of his be in the same game as Preecha and Rock.
